Milecastles, Turrets & Forts Explained
Hadrian's Wall was a system, not a single rampart. Meet the milecastles, turrets and forts that made the frontier work, and learn to read them on the ground.

It's tempting to picture Hadrian's Wall as a single long rampart, but it was really an integrated system with a rhythm you can still trace today. Along its 73 miles the Romans combined three tiers of structure: forts to house the garrison, small fortified gateways called milecastles at regular intervals, and observation towers — turrets — between them. Add the ditch to the north and the vallum earthwork to the south, and you have a frontier designed for watching, signalling and controlling a landscape rather than merely blocking it. Understanding these building blocks transforms a visit: instead of a picturesque line of stones, you start to see a coordinated military machine, with each element doing a specific job in a chain that ran from sea to sea.
Milecastles: the gateways
A milecastle was a small guarded fortlet built into the Wall roughly every Roman mile — about 1,480 metres, a little short of a modern mile. Each held a gateway through the Wall, front and back, and a small garrison, perhaps a handful to a couple of dozen men housed in one or two barrack blocks. There were around eighty in total, numbered by archaeologists from east to west. Their spacing is remarkably regular, even where it forced a milecastle onto an awkward, exposed site — a sign of how systematically the frontier was laid out. The gateways made milecastles the crossing points of the Wall, the checkpoints through which controlled traffic passed. Milecastle 37 near Housesteads and Milecastle 39 near Sycamore Gap are among the best to see today.
Turrets: eyes on the line
Between each pair of milecastles stood two turrets — small stone watchtowers set roughly a third of a Roman mile apart, so that the whole Wall was under near-continuous observation. That gives an original total of around 160. Each turret was a tower of perhaps two or three storeys, its ground floor recessed into the Wall, manned by soldiers rotating out from the nearby milecastles or forts. From them, sentries could watch the ground to the north and pass signals along the line. Turrets are numbered in pairs off their milecastle — 7a and 7b, for example. Many are reduced to low footings now, but the well-preserved ones, like those near Chesters and along the central crags, let you stand where a soldier once scanned the empty moor for movement.
The forts: home to the garrison
When building began, the main garrison was based at forts on the older Stanegate road behind the line. Early in construction the plan changed and around fifteen large forts were built directly astride the Wall itself, projecting north of it so troops could deploy quickly on either side. These were substantial bases — Housesteads held some 800 infantry, Chesters a cavalry regiment — with barracks, granaries, headquarters buildings, commanders' houses, bathhouses and hospitals. Each sat about seven Roman miles from the next, roughly a half-day's march apart. The forts were the beating heart of the frontier: the milecastles and turrets watched and controlled the line, but the fighting strength, the administration and the daily life of the Wall were concentrated behind these walls.
Broad Wall, Narrow Wall and the builders' shortcuts
Look closely at the stonework and you can read the construction story in the masonry itself. The Wall was first laid out on broad foundations, nearly three metres wide, intended to carry a substantial stone rampart. Partway through, to speed the enormous task, the builders narrowed the wall above — the so-called Narrow Wall sitting on Broad Wall footings, a visible step where the two meet. The legions did the building, and different work-gangs left 'centurial stones' recording which unit finished which length. The turf-built western sector was another economy, later upgraded to stone. These details aren't just for specialists: once you know to look, the Wall becomes a document of Roman military engineering under pressure to finish a colossal project at speed.
How to read the Wall today
You don't need to be an archaeologist to make sense of what survives. Learn the four main elements and their spacing, and almost any stretch of the central sector starts to explain itself — the run of the Wall, the regular bump of a milecastle, the footings of a turret between, and the great forts anchoring it all. Once the pattern clicks, a walk beside the Wall turns into a reading of the whole military system.
